Wild Horse Shetland Pony Appaloosa

Shetland Pony

Broadwell Farm, Devon - Broadspring Shetland Ponies

Using breeding techniques, humans have developed many types of horses that differ widely in body size and shape, including ponies, which are generally smaller and stockier than horses.  The Shetland pony is compact and muscular, with hard, tough hooves and a double winter coat that can be black, brown, chestnut, gray, or patchy.  Large nasal passages warm the cold air before it reaches the pony’s lungs.  Shetland ponies most likely crossed from Scandinavia about 10,000 years ago on then-existing ice fields.
