Proper Show Attire
Applies to:
- any away show
- any open show at home (open means that
riders from other barns are invited to compete).
Proper show attire varies depending on age,
division/level and discipline. Some of the things you wear everyday may be
appropriate. All show clothing should be clean, fitted and in good
condition. Correct turn-out for both horse and rider is very important and
will be taken into account by the judge. There are many tack shops that
sell used apparel and tack on consignment as well as closeout items. E-bay
and Craig's List are other resource options. Ask at the barn if there are
items other riders have outgrown.
The following are basic items you will need to show.
Please consult your instructor for details. It is suggested that when you
decide to show-purchase items a few at a time as it can be expensive to purchase
all at once.
Children 12 and under - lead line,
beginner, short stirrup, pony hunters/equition.
- Approved Helmet - must be ASTM/SEI
certified. Black, velvet or suede type covering. Black or
leather harness. Some suggested brands are IRH, Troxel, Charles Owen, GPA.
Your tack show can help you get the correct fit. The helmets that are
finished only in plastic are not appropriate but you can purchase stretch
velvet covers for them.
- Paddock Boots - short boots, may be zippered
style or lace up (fashion boots from a regular shoe store are not
appropriate, a proper riding boot has the correct foot bed and heel
for safety). These may be black or brown and can be worn with 1/2
chaps or jods for daily riding. Leather is preferred but many nice
looking man-made materials are available. Riding "sneaker" styles are
not appropriate for showing. Some suggested brands: Ariat, Grand
Prix, Ovation, Dublin, Saxon.
- Jods -Tan, beige or khaki. Must be
cuffed and worn with straps that go under boots. (Breeches are not
appropriate with paddock boots for showing.)
- Belt
- Garters - (also called knee straps) are worn
around leg under the knee to keep jods in place. Brown or black to
match your paddock boots.
- Shirt - must have choker style collar for
girls and an oxford style shirt with tie for boys. Shirts may be
solid colors, plaid or stripes to coordinate with your jacket. Chokers
may be plain or monogrammed - NO PINS.
- Hunt Coat - fitted for riding (regular
blazers or suit coats are not appropriate) may be navy, gray, brown, solid,
pin-striped, plaid. We suggest going basic.
- Gloves - black leather is suggested but
there are many other options that give the rider a good grip. No
colored gloves in the show ring please.
Adults and Children 13+ - hunter and
equitation divisions.
All items the same as above with the following
exceptions.
- Breeches - tan, beige or khaki.
These are made to fit in tall boots.
- Field Boots - tall boots, laced at ankles,
must be very fitted in the leg, may be zip or pull on. Garters not
necessary.
- Helmet - same as above, but hair must be
worn up, neatly in a hair net matching rider's hair color. Hair net
should be tucked under helmet.

ratings.
